Tommy Fitchet

 

Tommy Fitchet is a contemporary Scottish landscape artist whose paintings explore the relationship between light, colour, place and memory.

 

Painting on the beaches of Scotland and from his studio and gallery in Edinburgh, Fitchet draws much of his inspiration from travelling through Scotland—particularly its islands, coastlines and remote landscapes. These journeys, along with the changing seasons and shifting light of the Scottish landscape, provide an ever-changing source of ideas for his work.

 

His paintings sit between landscape and abstraction. Rather than simply recording a particular view, Fitchet responds instinctively to the atmosphere and emotion of a place, distilling what he sees and feels into colour, shape, movement and light. Familiar landscapes become less about geography and more about the experience of being there.

 

Working across oils, acrylics and inks on canvas, paper and board, he builds his paintings through layers of colour, mark-making and gesture. The process is intuitive and fluid, allowing the painting to develop organically and often retaining a sense of what has gone before. Light is central to the work—not simply as something observed, but as something felt.

 

From the edge of the city to the remote coastlines and islands of Scotland, Fitchet is drawn to fleeting moments: a break in the cloud, light moving across the sea, the last glow of evening, or the quiet atmosphere that remains after the landscape has changed.

 

Based in Edinburgh, Fitchet works from his studio gallery, where he paints, exhibits and welcomes visitors to experience his work directly. His paintings are held in private collections in the UK and internationally, and he has exhibited across Scotland and in London.
